The functions served by churches in later DQ games all happen in different places in Dragon Quest I. Resurrection isn't an issue because you're a single character and resurrection happens automatically- at the cost of half your cash. Oucheth.
There's a man in Tantegel Town, AKA Brecconary, that removes curses. And for poison, you have to buy an antidotal herb.
Lastly, you save the game and find out XP to your next level from the King- a distinction shared by Dragon Quest II.
